2021 Hyundai i30 N's Manual-Driven Assessment

New 2021 Hyundai i30 N: A Sharper and More Powerful Driving Experience

The 2021 Hyundai i30 N is back with a facelift, offering a quicker, sharper, and more involving driving experience. This hot hatchback has undergone significant changes, both under the hood and in its design.

Under the bonnet, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine now delivers 206 kW, which is 4 kW more powerful than its predecessor, and has 39 Nm more torque. The newly developed turbocharging system is responsible for this boost in power. The engine produces 206 kW at 6000 rpm and 392 Nm from 2100-4700 rpm.

The chassis has received greater changes than the powertrain. Revisions to springs, bushings, and damper calibrations, and new geometry have been implemented, aiming to enhance the driving dynamics. The front brakes have been upgraded to 360mm rotors with cooling ducts mounted to the lower control arms, ensuring reliable stopping power.

The manual transmission in the 2021 Hyundai i30 N allows for heel-toe downshifts and has improved significantly, with more positive shifts. This improvement is a welcome addition for enthusiasts who prefer the tactile feel of a manual transmission.

The i30 N retains its analogue instruments and manual handbrake, giving it a classic feel. The interior, however, features hard, coarse grain plastic on the dash and center console. Despite this, the standard seats are comfortable and supportive.

The steering wheel in the 2021 Hyundai i30 N features long paddles and a pair of Performance Blue quick select N buttons. This setup allows for easy control of the drive modes, which include a number of options, with the 'N Custom' mode being accessible via a spider's web type display in the centre screen.

The standard equipment for the 2021 Hyundai i30 N includes keyless entry and go, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, and blind-spot collision warning. Other features such as lane following assist, rear cross-traffic alert, wireless phone charging, and rear privacy glass are also included.

The interior of the i30 N offers a sparse rear environment, with only a pair of air vents. However, this minimalist approach allows for a focus on the driving experience.

The 2021 Hyundai i30 N is priced at $44,500, making it an affordable option for those seeking a performance-oriented hatchback. For those wanting additional features, there is a Premium pack available for an extra $3000. This pack includes lightweight bucket seats, Alcantara/leather interior, rain-sensing wipers, front parking sensors, rear privacy glass, heated front seats and steering wheel, and an electro-chromatic rear-view mirror.

Adding a panoramic sunroof to the 2021 Hyundai i30 N will cost an additional $1500.

The facelifted 2021 Hyundai i30 N has a sharper and more aggressive appearance, reflecting its enhanced performance capabilities. Despite this, it offers a more than acceptable level of ride comfort, although road and tyre noise can be noticeable on certain surfaces.

The 2021 Hyundai i30 N manual has been somewhat overlooked in comparison to its dual-clutch sibling. However, the improved manual transmission feels more positive, with none of the occasional 'catching' between gears that was present in the old model.

In conclusion, the 2021 Hyundai i30 N is a compelling choice for those seeking a performance-oriented hatchback with a focus on driving dynamics. Its improved powertrain, enhanced chassis, and affordable price make it a strong contender in the hot hatchback segment.
