Toyota's Hydrogen-Powered Car Completes 24-Hour Endurance Race

In a historic feat, a hydrogen-powered racing car completed the 24-hour endurance race at Fuji Speedway, Japan, on May 23, 2021. The car, equipped with a hydrogen combustion engine, was a product of Toyota's involvement in the planning and execution of the race.

The car covered a distance of 1,634km (358 laps) during the event, passing the 1,000km mark at 17 hours into the race and breaking the 1,500km mark with just under two hours to go. The team had to refuel the car 35 times during the race.

The journey was not without its challenges. Akio Toyoda, a team member and the driver of the car during the race, encountered a hydrogen leak issue. The team had to repair the hydrogen leak and other issues multiple times during the race. Morizo, another driver, also faced steering irregularities and made an emergency pit stop with one hour to go.

Despite the setbacks, the car continued to run smoothly. The problem with the rearview monitor was a minor inconvenience compared to the significant strides made. The car's hydrogen detection sensors were demonstrated to be working with high precision during the race.

Kamui Kobayashi, a veteran driver, started the race in the driver's seat. He was followed by Akio Toyoda, who handed over the reins to Hiroaki Ishiura after an hour on the track. Ishiura took over once more from Matsui with one and a half hours remaining. Morizo returned for his second run at 17.5 hours into the race.

The mechanics' exhaustion reached its peak during the race, but Akio viewed those hours as a valuable asset. He believes there were many findings due to the race, providing valuable insights for improving the car.

As the car passed the checkered flag alongside the #28 GR Supra at 3:00 p.m., the team celebrated completing the race. Akio Toyoda addressed the team after the race, expressing gratitude for completing the race despite facing problems. He also promised to continue taking action towards a carbon-neutral future.

The successful completion of the 24-hour endurance race marks a significant milestone in the development and application of hydrogen-powered technology in the automotive industry. The team's determination and resilience in the face of challenges serve as a testament to their commitment to a sustainable future.
