A unique opportunity to experience a lunar journey near the red supergiant star Antares will take place on August 30

Photographers and astronomy enthusiasts, mark your calendars! On September 7, 2025, we will witness a spectacular total lunar eclipse, also known as a blood moon. This celestial event is not to be missed, and our article on how to image a lunar eclipse can help you capture the moment with impressive results.

The total lunar eclipse will occur when Earth passes directly between the lunar disk and the sun, casting an impenetrable shadow on the moon. During this event, the moon's full moon phase will coincide, resulting in a dramatic display of the blood moon.

In the days leading up to the event, the nearly half-lit moon can be spotted hanging a little less than 20 degrees above the southwestern horizon at sunset on Aug. 30. As it continues eastward through the stars of the constellations Sagittarius, Capricornus, and Aquarius, it will appear to skip past the red star Antares in the constellation Scorpius.

Antares, often known as the 'heart of the scorpion', is among the brightest stars visible to the naked eye in the northern hemisphere. This binary star system, made up of a red supergiant star with a white main sequence companion, will shine as a bright red point of light roughly 5 degrees to the upper left of the waxing moon.
