Abandoning Support for Centre-Left Political Groups: The Reason?
In a political landscape that's constantly evolving, the center-left parties in Germany – the SPD and the Greens – have seen a significant shift in voter allegiance in recent years. This article invites you, our readers, to share your experiences and thoughts about why you no longer vote for these parties.
Back in 1998, over 40% of Germans cast their votes for the SPD. However, the party achieved a historically poor result of just over 16% in the last federal election. Meanwhile, the Greens reached approval ratings of over 20% in 2022, but are now below 12%.
Many former SPD and Green voters have switched to parties like the Left party or the CDU, or even voted for the AfD. This shift can be attributed to a variety of factors, including dissatisfaction with policy positions or political developments. For instance, the AfD has gained voters who previously supported other parties, including some who formerly voted SPD or Greens, attracted by its stance, especially after the 2021 federal elections.
The SPD, originally founded as an anti-war party, took a controversial stand when it supported the German military deployment in Kosovo. This move alienated many voters who identified with the party's peace-oriented roots.
The center-left parties have faced stories of broken promises, lost trust, and lack of identification. We want to hear from you – our readers – about your reasons for no longer voting center-left. Your perspectives are valuable in enriching our journalism.
