"ABC News Special: Robin Roberts from 'GMA' revisits the Gulf Coast, marking twenty years since Hurricane Katrina"

Twenty years have passed since Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Gulf Coast, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. One of the many lives affected by the storm was that of Robin Roberts, a Gulf Coast native and co-anchor of "Good Morning America".

Roberts, who hails from Mississippi, found herself reporting on the disaster that struck her hometown in 2005. Now, she is marking the 20-year anniversary by producing a special, "Hurricane Katrina: 20 Years After the Storm with Robin Roberts".

The documentary will air on ABC on Aug. 29 at 8 p.m. ET, and will be available for streaming the next day on Hulu and Disney+ for bundle subscribers. In the special, Roberts retraces the steps she took while reporting in the days and weeks after the hurricane first hit.

During live reports after the hurricane, Roberts showed emotion, which was unusual for journalists at the time. However, her authenticity resonated with the public, who appreciated her efforts to help them understand the severity of Katrina. Southerners showed vulnerability and strength during Hurricane Katrina, and Roberts' emotional reports reflected that.

The special will see Roberts revisiting some of the hardest hit areas from the hurricane, including New Orleans, Biloxi, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. She will also be joined by artists such as Harry Connick Jr., Trombone Shorty, Tank from Tank & The Bangas, and Branford Marsalis, who will share their personal experiences and reflections on the storm.

Hurricane Katrina is one of the deadliest and costliest hurricanes in American history, with many people who were affected by the storm not surviving to see the 20-year anniversary. Coverage of recent natural disasters like flooding in Texas, wildfires in Southern California, and Maui have been influenced by the coverage of Hurricane Katrina.

The Walt Disney Company, the parent company of ABC News, Hulu, Disney+, and this station, is backing the special. Roberts' story in the aftermath of Katrina is filled with pride for her hometown, and she hopes that the documentary will provide a personal perspective on the aftermath and recovery from the storm.
