Academic Highlight: Building on Predecessors' Shobjects of Wisdom
In the bustling world of Stanford University, two students, Joseph Bolling and Ankush Gola, are making waves with their innovative Senior Thesis project. The Engineering Correspondent, Stacey Huang, brings us an exclusive look at this groundbreaking venture.
The project, which integrates the virtual reality headset Occulus Rift, aims to provide an aerial perspective as if the user were a giant. Bolling and Gola draw inspiration from a cartoon titled "Depth Perception" by the science comic XKCD, where the world is viewed from a towering height.
The system captures images or videos from two quadcopters with mounted cameras. These images or videos are sent to the main computer and stitched together to form a 3D perspective, offering the user a unique, immersive experience.
Quadcopters, similar to helicopters but with four rotors instead of one, have become popular among commercial and recreational drone operators. One of the robots acts as the master unit while the other follows, tracking it by laser and GPS to constantly measure the distance between the two. This consistency is crucial to producing a natural-looking stereo image.
Flying the quadcopters is the best part, according to Gola. Despite the technical challenges such as processing feedback to control the system, Bolling and Gola are making steady progress toward their final goal. A preliminary video of a flight test with one quadcopter is available, showcasing the potential of this exciting project.
Humans have always been curious about flight and flying, as Huang notes. This project, part of our blog Archives, exemplifies that curiosity and pushes the boundaries of what is possible. Stay tuned for more updates on this captivating Senior Thesis project.
