Accidents on District Roads of Harburg Increase, Yet Fewer Casualties Reported

In the bustling Harburg district, traffic has become more dynamic, according to Police Chief Commissioner Frank Waldhaus, as a nearly 13% increase in total accidents was recorded from 2022 to 2023, totalling 7,090.

Despite this rise, there was a significant decrease in traffic fatalities, with only 5 deaths reported in 2023. Two vehicle occupants and three pedestrians were unfortunate victims, marking a stark contrast to the 13 traffic fatalities reported in 2002.

The number of seriously injured individuals decreased to 131, a drop of 14 from the previous year. However, the number of slightly injured individuals also saw a slight decrease, with 737 individuals reporting injuries, down by 7 from 2022.

One concerning trend that has emerged is the increase in drivers fleeing the scene of an accident. In 2023, there were 1,674 cases of drivers absconding, an increase from 1,545 in the previous year. Fortunately, in 43 percent of these cases, the police were able to identify the driver.

E-scooters, a popular mode of transport in the district, were involved in 23 traffic accidents in 2023, a decrease of 9 compared to the previous year.

However, a trend that is not explicitly detailed is the increase in hit-and-run drivers in Harburg traffic accidents. The specific reasons for this trend remain unclear.

A positive development is the significant decrease in wildlife accidents. In 2023, the number of such accidents increased by 377 to 1,478, but thankfully, only six people were injured, one of them severely.

Interestingly, there were no fatalities on highways in the Harburg district, where 1,137 traffic accidents occurred.

As we navigate the changing landscape of traffic in the Harburg district, it is crucial to remain vigilant, respect the rules of the road, and prioritise safety for all road users.
