Acclaimed Comedian and Actor Jackie Gleason

Homestead Air Reserve Base, located in Homestead, Florida, has a rich history that dates back to World War II. Originally opened as Homestead Army Airfield in 1942, the base served as a training ground and base for anti-submarine missions. After being decommissioned and then reactivated, it became Homestead Air Force Base in 1955.

The base, however, faced a significant setback in August 1992 when Hurricane Andrew struck, causing severe damage and destroying most of the buildings and facilities. As a result, the base temporarily ceased operations and was rebuilt as a smaller, more efficient facility, reopening in 1994 as Homestead Air Reserve Base.

Today, the base is home to the 482nd Fighter Wing (482 FW) of the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC). Known as the "Makos," this combat-ready unit provides F-16C multi-purpose fighter aircraft, along with mission-ready pilots and support personnel, for rapid deployment anywhere in the world.

The base's history has been intertwined with speculations and controversies, particularly regarding unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and extraterrestrial life. One anecdote suggests that in February 1973, President Richard Nixon drove Jackie Gleason, a well-known comedian and friend of Nixon, to Homestead Air Force Base in Florida. According to this story, Nixon showed Gleason evidence of extraterrestrial life, including wreckage of a crashed UFO and preserved alien bodies. However, library records do not provide any information to support this claim.

The connection between Air Force Bases (AFBs) and UFO sightings is a topic that has been the subject of much speculation and investigation. Some believe that AFBs, being highly secure military facilities, could be hiding information about the existence of UFOs and extraterrestrial life. This theory is further fuelled by the fact that several U.S. presidents, including Richard Nixon, have shown an interest in UFOs and the phenomena.

The Gleason-Nixon story is well-established in the UFO history narrative, often included in books like "The Presidents and UFOs: A Secret History from FDR to Obama" by Larry Holcombe. However, it's important to note that this story, like many UFO-related claims, remains unverified.

The mainstream press, including The New York Times and The Washington Post, typically mention the Gleason-Nixon story as a footnote in their coverage of UFOs and celebrity fascination with the paranormal. The Fox network's mocking of UFOs being discussed in Congress is seen as a shame by some, given the potential implications for national security if UFOs were indeed interrupting our nuclear military operations.

Despite the controversy, Homestead Air Reserve Base continues to play a crucial role in the United States' air defence system, a testament to its resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges.
