Accused Figure in July Uprising Murder Case, Former Professor and BCL Leader Jony, Now Imprisoned
In a series of events that have shaken the academic community, Mahmudur Rahman Jony, a former assistant proctor and assistant professor at Jahangirnagar University, was arrested in connection with the murder of Russell, who was shot during protests in Savar's Muktir More area last August.
Jony was dismissed from Jahangirnagar University in February of the previous year, following allegations of sexual harassment of a female student. The syndicate meeting that led to his dismissal was chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Nurul Alam.
Russell, unfortunately, passed away later at a hospital following the shooting. His brother filed a murder case against Jony on 16 September with Savar Model Police Station.
Prior to his time at Jahangirnagar University, there is no relevant information available about Mahmudur Rahman Jony's background. He served in the Department of Public Health and Informatics at the university.
