Achievement unlocked: Yet another success accomplished
The city of Hürth is set to begin the demolition of the former AOK building in Hürth-Hermülheim between late April and early May 2025. This significant milestone in the further development of the neighborhood is part of the urban development project "Lebensader Lux," which includes the construction of a new building and a plaza with a water feature, greenery, and high-quality amenities.
The demolition process will be supervised and carried out by the city administration of Hürth in cooperation with RWTH Aachen and Construction Robotics, as part of the European Target-X research project. This collaboration will ensure a thorough inventory and recycling of building materials for sustainable reuse and research purposes.
Potentially hazardous materials have already been identified and documented in advance, and will be disposed of properly and separately. To minimize vibrations and disruptions, the demolition will be performed floor by floor, from top to bottom. The demolition will occur entirely within the property, requiring no additional road closures beyond the existing closure of Luxemburger Straße.
Facade metal scrap will be collected separately during the demolition process. Selected materials such as grating, sheet metal elements, bricks, windows, and benches will be provided for a research project in cooperation with RWTH Aachen. A public auction will be held to sell remaining furniture and fixtures from the former AOK building before demolition.
The goal is to completely clear the site by the end of September 2025. The demolition work is a crucial step towards transforming the neighborhood, bringing it one step closer to the vision of a vibrant and modern community space.
