Activision Shakes Up Call of Duty Matchmaking with New Open Moshpit Mode

Activision has introduced a new multiplayer mode in the Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 beta, aiming to shake up matchmaking. The Open Moshpit mode, a nod to the 'openai' concept, reduces skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) to create more varied gameplay experiences.

Activision has been engaging with the community, listening to feedback about matchmaking. In response, they've updated their playlist plans. The new Open Moshpit mode drastically reduces skill consideration during matchmaking, allowing players of varying skill levels to play together in a 'us open' manner.

This is a significant shift from Activision's previous stance. They had previously shared an inside look at Call of Duty's SBMM and published a whitepaper suggesting players preferred stronger SBMM, even when unaware of its implementation. However, critics of SBMM argue that it leads to 'sweaty' play, predictable outcomes, and hinders skill development for lower-ranked players. The introduction of Open Moshpit marks the first time Activision has made a concession to these critics.

Activision's release of the Open Moshpit mode in the Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 beta signals a change in approach to matchmaking. This new mode allows for more varied match experiences, potentially addressing some of the criticisms of SBMM. It will be interesting to see how players respond to this change and whether it influences future updates.
