Jude Law takes on the role of a lifetime in the new film "The Wizard of the Kremlin," directed by Olivier Assayas. The political thriller, which is based on Russian history over the last 30 years, premiered at the Filmfestspiele in Venice on Sunday evening.
Law plays the enigmatic character of Vladimir Putin, but assures that his portrayal is not an imitation. "I did not want to create controversy for the sake of controversy," Law said. "I wanted to tell Putin's story intelligently, subtly, and thoughtfully."
To prepare for the role, Law learned Judo and watched a vast amount of footage. He also emphasised that the public image of Putin reveals very little. "The film explores Putin's rise to the Russian presidency from the perspective of a young advisor," Assayas explained.
Paul Dano plays a fictional character in the film, based on the Russian politician Vladislav Surkov. The film is competing for the Golden Lion at the Filmfestspiele.
Law stated that he had no fear of Putin's reaction to the film. "My role in the film did not define anyone," he said. "I am an actor portraying a character, and I believe that the film will speak for itself."
The film is based on a novel and Law, who has had a positive experience working on the project, is confident that it will resonate with audiences. "The Wizard of the Kremlin" is a drama film that promises to captivate and challenge viewers.
