Actor Wendell Pierce secures a sum of $10 million to bolster theaters centering around diverse cultures in New York City.
Actor Wendell Pierce, best known for his role as Willie Loman in Death of a Salesman, has secured a $10 million investment for the Legacy Theatres of Color initiative. This project, part of a broader community investment by Caesars Palace Times Square in New York, aims to boost production, marketing, and awareness for historically Black theatre institutions.
The Legacy Theatres of Color initiative is led by the New York Coalition of Legacy Theatres of Color Fund, a 501(c)(3) organization. The fund will focus on supporting the Billie Holiday Theatre, the Black Spectrum Theatre, and The Negro Ensemble Company, with the possibility of extending aid to other institutions beyond these.
Pierce, a long-time champion of the Broadway community, has been at the forefront of this initiative. He expressed that the social justice movement of the 21st century is economic development and creating opportunities that sustain and uplift communities, both on stage and beyond. Pierce emphasized that this initiative is not only about preserving cultural history but also about creating new opportunities for the next generation of Black theatre artists.
The Legacy Theatres of Color initiative is not the only expansion planned by Caesars Palace Times Square. The company, in partnership with Roc Nation and Live Nation, is also developing a hotel and gaming complex in Times Square. This broader project includes public safety improvements, a new civil rights museum, and support for health and social services.
The exact theatres that will receive funding from the Legacy Theatres of Color initiative are the Billie Holiday Theatre, the Black Spectrum Theatre, and The Negro Ensemble Company. The location of these theatres, as well as the proposed hotel and gaming complex, will be in Times Square, New York.
As the Legacy Theatres of Color initiative moves forward, it promises to bring artistic vibrancy across Times Square while fostering workforce inclusion and community partnerships. The project is expected to make significant contributions to the Broadway community and the city of New York.
