Adidas announces their Yeezy collaboration is being re-evaluated
In a surprising turn of events, sports apparel giant Adidas has announced that it will be placing its partnership with rapper and fashion mogul Kanye West, also known as Ye, under review. This decision comes after West wore a "White Lives Matter" T-shirt to his Paris fashion week show and made several criticisms against Adidas and its executives in recent weeks.
The controversy surrounding West's fashion choices has not gone unnoticed. Sean Combs, also known as Diddy, has spoken out against the "White Lives Matter" shirt, stating that it shouldn't be taken lightly by the fashion world. Combs, a vocal supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, has also expressed the importance of taking a stance against inequality in America.
The Yeezy Adidas union has been strained for some time now. The messy breakup of the Yeezy Gap deal has not helped matters, and the Yeezy Gap merchandise still in possession of Adidas and Gap remains a contentious issue. Gap Inc., which owns the Gap brand, is facing pressure to pull its remaining Yeezy Gap merchandise, but has yet to respond to a request for comment.
The draw of the Yeezy brand, however, may be hard to resist, even in the face of controversy. Nike Yeezy shoes are listed for tens of thousands of dollars on sneaker resale sites, indicating the brand's enduring popularity. The collaboration between Adidas and Kanye West began in 2005 with the creation of the Yeezy fashion collection, and the partnership has produced some of the most iconic products in the industry. Adidas has stated that it will continue to manage the current Yeezy products during the review period.
This is not the first time West has made headlines for his criticisms of other brands. In 2016, he accused Nike of treating employees like slaves in his song "Facts". He also publicly criticized Nike's corporate culture and then-CEO Mark Parker. The Nike Yeezy collaboration ended nine years ago.
West has also made headlines for his accusations against Adidas. In a since-deleted Instagram post, he declared "I am Adidas" and accused the brand of stealing his designs. He has also claimed that Adidas offered him $1 billion to end their relationship.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the partnership between Adidas and Kanye West. Adidas has said in an emailed statement that it's proud of the iconic products born from its collaboration with West, but it seems that the partnership may be on the brink of ending.
