Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, unveils refurbished dome of Vidhan Sabha, attends all-party assembly meeting.
The Uttar Pradesh (UP) Assembly is set to implement a pioneering AI-based surveillance system during legislative sessions, beginning with the 2025 Monsoon Session. This project, set to be fully deployed during the winter session, aims to monitor and analyze the behaviour and performance of Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) using state-of-the-art AI cameras equipped with facial recognition technology.
Key details of the implementation include: - The AI cameras can identify MLAs by matching faces with a database containing names, party affiliation, constituency, gender, date of birth, photos, and other personal details. - The system records attendance, duration of stay, number of topics addressed, and performs topic-based speech content analysis to assess the nature of discussions MLAs engage in.
This approach aims not only to enhance security but also to bring greater transparency and accountability by providing data-driven insights into MLA participation and conduct during sessions.
By precisely tracking attendance and speech activity, the system creates an objective record of MLA engagement, potentially discouraging absenteeism or inattentiveness. Content analysis can provide insight into legislative priorities and whether MLAs are addressing constituent concerns or policy issues effectively. The use of facial recognition and detailed profiles could personalize accountability, enabling the public and media to scrutinize individual performances more effectively.
However, such comprehensive surveillance also raises concerns about privacy and possible misuse, given the continuous monitoring of individuals within a political institution. While no explicit controversies have been reported as of now, these concerns are valid and warrant further discussion.
In a separate development, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited Kakori Shaheed Memorial on Friday for the closing ceremony on the 100th anniversary of the historic event. The Uttar Pradesh government, under CM Yogi, renamed the 'Kakori Kand' to 'Kakori Train action' in 2021, as the word 'Kand' denotes a sense of insult to this incident under India's Independence struggle.
During a public gathering, CM Yogi spoke on the preservation of Sambhal's religious heritage, historical injustices, and political opponents. Describing Sambhal as a symbol of Hindu faith, he warned that "those who sin with Sambhal will face severe punishment for their actions."
The Monsoon Session of the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha is scheduled to begin on August 11, 2025. Prior to this, an all-party meeting was held to discuss the session, attended by CM Yogi Adityanath, Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana, Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna, Leader of Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey, Minister Sanjay Nishad, Om Prakash Rajbhar, Congress MLA Aradhana Mishra, BSP MLA Umashankar Singh, and MLA Kunwar Raghuraj Pratap Singh, among others.
During the Budget Session earlier this year, the state's ₹8 lakh crore budget for 2025-26 was presented. The Kakori Train Action or Kakori Conspiracy was a train robbery that took place in 1925, organized by the Hindustan Republican Association. More than 40 persons were arrested in this incident, and they were finally sentenced to death by the British government.
