German Basketball Star Daniel Theis Stands with Teammate Dennis Schröder After Racist Incident

During a media round in the German team hotel in Tampere, Finland on Sunday, basketball player Daniel Theis expressed his solidarity with teammate Dennis Schröder, who was subjected to racist taunts during the EuroBasket game against Lithuania.

Theis, who has known Schröder for decades, praised the German captain's reaction to the incident, stating that Schröder was mentally strong and responded with his performance on the court. Schröder's response was noted by Theis, as he gave his best on the court following the racist insults.

The racist insults against Schröder, specifically monkey noises, occurred during the third group stage game against Lithuania in Tampere, Finland. Two fans were identified and expelled from the arena, and one was banned from attending the rest of the EuroBasket 2025 games after being identified through video surveillance by arena security.

Theis stated that he and Schröder are there for each other, like family and friends, and that he stands behind Schröder in this difficult time. Schröder himself responded to the racist taunts by saying, "You can insult me, but monkey noises is a thing I don't respect and don't accept. Racism doesn't belong in this sport."

Schröder's performance on the court was commendable, as he showed his resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Theis believes that Schröder's performance deserves respect and that he will answer the taunts with his performance on the court.

Theis's comments were made in Tampere, Finland, where the German team is currently competing in the EuroBasket Championship. Theis and Schröder are teammates on the German basketball national team, and they have a strong bond both on and off the court.

The incident serves as a reminder that racism has no place in sports or in society. Both Theis and Schröder have shown that they will not tolerate such behaviour and will continue to stand up against racism and discrimination.
