In Singapore, a 15-year-old student had an enlightening experience at a student leader workshop organised by the National Council Against Drug Abuse (NCADA). The workshop, designed to provide a space for teenagers to understand why they should avoid certain behaviours, was particularly impactful.

During the workshop, the student spent the afternoon with former drug offenders, who shared their personal stories about their experiences with substances such as cigarettes, vapes, and Kpods. These vape pods, laced with dangerous anaesthetics, have been known to cause harm.

What made the workshop stand out was the fact that the former drug offenders spoke plainly and honestly, without using scare tactics. Their stories did not feel like a lecture, but rather a heartfelt sharing of experiences. Many of them admitted that their initial use of these substances started due to curiosity, peer pressure, or simply trying it once.

The student who attended the workshop found the stories shared by former drug offenders compelling and not didactic. They stated that the stories did not feel like a lecture but rather a genuine conversation about the risks and negative outcomes associated with these substances.

The workshop did not just focus on telling teenagers what not to do, but also aimed to educate them on the reasons behind the advice. It offered an opportunity for teenagers to contribute to conversations about avoiding harmful behaviours, fostering a sense of responsibility and awareness among the participants.

For the student who attended, the workshop was formative. They left with a newfound understanding of the consequences of certain choices and a renewed commitment to making positive decisions. The workshop served as a reminder that the choices we make in our youth can have lasting impacts on our lives.
