Language Workshop and Kindergarten in Amberg: Promoting Cultural Diversity and Language Learning

In the heart of Amberg, Germany, a unique language workshop and kindergarten program is making waves. Organized every two months by Carmen Donhauser, the workshop offers language tables for Arabic, English, Japanese, Russian, and Bavarian dialect, each accompanied by country-specific games.

At the English table, Scrabble is a popular choice, while Durak, a Russian card game, is enjoyed at the Russian table. The Bavarian table sees the learning of Schafkopf, a traditional German card game. Memory games, books, songs, and storytelling are used to aid in language learning, creating an immersive and engaging environment.

The idea for this language workshop originated in Regensburg and is primarily designed for adults. However, in Amberg, it has been adapted for young learners at the clarification plant. The Marienheim kindergarten, the only one participating in the language program of the Federal Ministry, is at the forefront of this initiative.

The Sprachkindergarten program, promoted by the organization "Gemeinschaftsförderung," has been supporting the Marienheim kindergarten for over a year. Participation in this program requires a kindergarten to apply, undergo training, and meet examinations for continuation.

The program emphasizes labeling everyday objects and events in German. It's important for children to master their native language before learning a second language, and this approach ensures a solid foundation. Participants are encouraged to bring in their own ideas, such as books or music pieces from their home country, fostering a sense of cultural pride.

Anita Rupprecht, the director of the Marienheim kindergarten, cares for 49 children from 11 different nations. Regional cantor and choir leader Bernhard Müller supports the educators musically, adding a melodious dimension to the language learning process.

Birgit Güirke, the deputy director and language education specialist, notes that after half a year, all children can understand each other well. Constant repetition is crucial for children who initially can't speak German to understand the language. Carmen Donhauser's project aims to promote cultural diversity, encouraging open interactions without prejudices.

This innovative language workshop and kindergarten program in Amberg is a testament to the power of education in fostering cultural understanding and language proficiency.
