The German Greens have announced a bill aimed at providing a long-term residence perspective for Yazidis who have been affected by the genocide committed by the Islamic State (IS) in 2014 in Sinjar, northern Iraq.

In a joint statement made on Saturday evening, Katharina DrΓΆge, the parliamentary group leader, and Max Lucks, the spokesperson for human rights policy, emphasized Germany's special responsibility towards the Yazidis due to the genocide. Thousands of Yazidi women and children were raped, abducted, and enslaved during this horrific period, and the pain, grief, and shock of these atrocities are still deeply felt today.

The bill is part of the Green parliamentary group's commitment to the Yazidis. It aims to ensure that Yazidis can live in peace, freedom, and dignity in Germany, preventing them from facing deportation to the land of their tormentors. Ignoring urgent court decisions regarding Yazidis seeking protection is unacceptable and impairs the rule of law, the Greens emphasized.

The federal government is expected to acknowledge Germany's special responsibility towards the Yazidis. Germany is home to the world's largest Yazidi diaspora, and the Greens underscored the importance of providing Yazidis a safe haven and a new home.

The bill is a response to Germany's special responsibility towards the Yazidis due to the genocide. The Greens have condemned the inhumane treatment of deporting families seeking protection and have vowed to do everything in their power to help the Yazidis rebuild their lives in Germany.

However, the specific timing when the Parliamentary Green Alliance in Germany plans to submit a legislative proposal to grant Yazidis affected by the so-called Islamic State a permanent residence perspective in Germany remains unclear.

The genocide resulted in the loss of thousands of innocent lives, and the Greens are determined to ensure that the Yazidis are given the opportunity to start anew in a safe and welcoming environment. The bill is a significant step towards achieving this goal and demonstrates the Greens' commitment to upholding human rights and providing a safe haven for those in need.
