Advocating for the Importance of the Humanities
At Holy Cross University, the McFarland Center played host to a thought-provoking event on April 10th, 2023, as Professor Heather Cox Richardson delivered the Thomas More Lecture in the Humanities. The esteemed Professor Richardson, along with President Vincent D. Rougeau and Provost Elliott Visconsi, engaged in a stimulating conversation that covered various topics, including the art of seduction, the meaning of democracy, and the significance of the liberal arts.
Professor Richardson, a renowned historian and the Chief Opinions Editor at the news publication, emphasised the importance of the liberal arts and its humanist nature. She argued that the liberal arts encompass a broad spectrum, including religion, government, history, and the rights of human beings. Moreover, she highlighted that the liberal arts offer a freedom of conscience, which is essential for a reality and truth-based society.
In her lecture, "On the Art of Seduction," Professor Richardson discussed the art of seduction and its importance in life. She delved into the intricacies of this ancient practice, shedding light on its relevance in contemporary times. Meanwhile, Alexandra Berardelli '25, the Opinions Editor at the news publication, wrote an accompanying article, offering her unique perspective on the topic.
In a separate article, Berardelli also explored the meaning of democracy, titled "What Does Democracy Mean to You?". This piece delved into the implications of democracy and its significance in today's world. Berardelli's passion for the subject was evident, as she articulated her thoughts with clarity and conviction.
Berardelli's writing prowess was also showcased in her heartfelt tribute to the long-running Broadway musical "The Phantom of the Opera," which closed its curtains on April 16, 2023. Her article, "A Love Letter to The Phantom of the Opera," was a poignant reflection on the end of an era and the impact the musical had on millions of lives.
The articles, all published in the "Opinions" section of the news publication, sparked discussions and debates among the university community. The event, and the subsequent articles, served as a reminder of the importance of open discourse, critical thinking, and the pursuit of knowledge in our ever-evolving world.
However, it is worth noting that Holy Cross University has not made any official statement regarding its position on the reform of American education systems or the support of liberal arts and humanities. The cost of education, a leading factor in the instrumentalization of undergraduate education, continues to affect students' decisions to attend colleges and universities.
The need for a balance between providing a meaningful education and preparing students for productive careers has put the liberal arts and humanities in a state of crisis. As we navigate this complex landscape, events like the Thomas More Lecture in the Humanities serve as beacons of hope, encouraging us to question, to learn, and to grow.
