"Aeroflot airline cancelled multiple flights due to technical issues: examining the mishap"
Aeroflot, Russia's largest airline, has been hit by a suspected cyber attack, leading to the cancellation and delay of numerous flights across the country. The airline's press service confirmed the malfunction in its systems, asking passengers of canceled flights to handle ticket return or exchange remotely before departure.
The cause of the malfunction is believed to be a cyber attack, as reported by Telegram channels and later confirmed by the General Prosecutor's Office of Russia. The attack is suspected to have been carried out by a hacker group believed to be supported by pro-Ukrainian groups, causing Aeroflot's servers to go down and chaos at Moscow airports.
Flights affected include those to and from St. Petersburg, Astrakhan, Grozny, Yekaterinburg, Yerevan, Kazan, Astana, Kaliningrad, Krasnoyarsk, Makhachkala, Mineralnye Vody, Minsk, and other cities. In St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport, three flights were canceled, while Aeroflot canceled 42 flights to and from Moscow, and then another seven pairs of flights to various cities. More than 80 flights have been delayed, and around 60 have been canceled.
In response to the suspected cyber attack, a criminal case has been opened for illegal access to computer information, and the General Prosecutor's Office of Russia has ordered oversight measures. The transport prosecutor's office is monitoring the situation related to the malfunction of Aeroflot's information systems at Sheremetyevo Airport.
Passengers of canceled flights are asked to leave the clean zone before departure. Currently, only special categories of passengers are having their tickets reissued at Sheremetyevo. However, the airline announced that the ticket offices at Sheremetyevo Airport are temporarily not processing refunds or rebooking tickets. Passengers can go to the baggage claim area to pick up their luggage and also to process a refund or rebook their tickets for flights within the next 10 days.
In Kaliningrad's Khrabrovo Airport, 12 flights were delayed. Refunds or ticket exchanges would be possible after the resumption of Aeroflot's services, according to the airline.
The Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, commented on the disruptions in Aeroflot's information systems, stating that the threat of a cyber attack persists for all large companies providing services to the public. The malfunction has caused delays and cancellations of flights, as reported by TASS.
Aeroflot has announced a forced adjustment to its flight schedule due to the malfunction in its information systems. The airline urges passengers to check the status of their flights on the Aeroflot website or mobile app before coming to the airport. The airline is working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and apologizes for any inconvenience caused.
