The world of mental health is witnessing a significant shift with the advent of AI technology. While therapy chatbots and other AI-powered tools promise to revolutionize mental healthcare, making it more accessible and convenient, they also raise concerns about privacy, data safety, and the potential for harmful advice.

In a 2024 Gallup poll, 52% of respondents pointed to affordability as the top barrier for mental healthcare, while 42% reported challenges finding a provider. AI, by optimizing administrative tasks, could help mental health providers achieve their goal of reaching those who struggle to access mental healthcare, with the right safety and privacy protections in place.

However, therapy chatbots can miss nuance, cannot read body language, and may give harmful advice. These systems work best with human oversight, as they're helpers, not replacements. The American Psychological Association advocated for federal regulation of mental health chatbots in February 2025, warning of the danger of chatbots encouraging users to engage in harmful practices.

Nearly half of respondents in a YouGov poll were worried about privacy and data safety when sharing personal information with therapy chatbots. In contrast, 1 in 3 respondents said they were comfortable sharing mental health issues with an AI chatbot.

AI has already disrupted the workforce and is expected to continue to do so for decades. While it may lead to fewer jobs in certain fields, with 52% of workers worried about AI in the workplace and 32% fearing personal job loss, it can also free up time for patient care.

Psychology has been at the heart of AI since the beginning, with psychological models shaping approaches to machine learning. Psychologists, among other disciplines, have contributed to artificial intelligence research, especially in areas involving neural networks based on neurophysiology developed since the mid-20th century.

Mental health therapists rank among the jobs least at risk due to AI, but there are still concerns about the growing popularity of AI-powered chatbots being used for mental health support. Therapy is not replaceable by AI, as it relies on human connection, attunement, intuition, and real-time interaction.

Psychology students are encouraged to understand the applications of AI in the field and the potential downsides. They can leverage AI technology without competing with it, by focusing on building strong clinical skills such as self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and ethical decision-making. AI should be seen as a tool, not competition.

AI can help psychologists in learning new therapy techniques, developing ideas for working with clients, transcribing and summarizing meetings, and more. Chatbots can make mental health support more accessible, being anonymous, always available, and helpful for psychoeducation, mood tracking, or even journaling prompts between sessions.

However, mental health providers may increasingly find themselves in conflict with chatbot advice. As these systems evolve, it's crucial that licensed mental health professionals play an important role in protecting the health and safety of those seeking support.

The rise of therapy chatbots and other AI tools will change psychology and the mental health field. AI-powered mental health tools could prove transformative, but there are concerns about privacy and data safety that need to be addressed. The key lies in finding a balance, ensuring that AI serves as a tool to assist mental health providers, rather than replace them.
