Bavarian Technical Relief Agency Supports Firefighting Efforts in Thuringia and Saxony
The Technical Relief Agency (THW) from Bavaria has been providing support to firefighters in Thuringia and Saxony since last Wednesday. This federal operational organization, carried by volunteers, boasts a nationwide force of around 88,000 volunteers.
In the summer of 2025, around 1,700 THW personnel from about 45 local groups aided firefighting efforts in Gohrischheide, Saxony, and Saalfelder HΓΆhe, Thuringia. These efforts included water and fuel supply, drone-based aerial reconnaissance, and infrastructure setup for wildfire control. However, the specific names of the Bavarian local THW units involved were not provided in the available sources.
Currently, deployment teams from Kronach, Selb, Mellrichstadt, Marktredwitz, Bayreuth, Kirchehrenbach, Forchheim, and Aschaffenburg are actively engaged. Their focus in Gohrischheide is ensuring smooth and goal-oriented operations. They have traveled with two water transport containers, each holding around 10,000 liters, to the disaster area.
In addition to catering, they are also supporting leadership and coordination tasks at the deployment sites. As of now, around 50 Bavarian THW personnel are deployed in Gohrischheide, supporting around 600 deployment forces.
The THW's mission in Thuringia on the Saalfelder Height has since been successfully completed. The agency's work in civil protection is based on the commitment of its experts, technology, and experience. They have set up a staging area that can supply thousands of firefighters and other aid organizations.
The THW is in demand worldwide for technical and logistical tasks on behalf of the federal government, the European Union's civil protection mechanism, and UN organizations. The high-performance pumps have been loaded onto trucks and are ready to deploy to Saxony at short notice.
