Aid Transportation by Bavaria: Delivery of Essential Supplies Following Libyan Floods

The German Technical Relief Organisation (THW) is gearing up to deliver much-needed relief goods to flood victims in Libya, particularly the hard-hit port city of Derna. This humanitarian effort comes in the wake of the Mediterranean storm "Daniel," which has caused heavy rainfall and flooding not only in Libya, but also in Greece and other regions.

The THW's aid delivery includes 100 tents equipped with lighting, 1,000 field beds, 1,000 blankets, 1,000 sleeping mats, and 80 power generators. This relief package is intended to provide immediate shelter and comfort to those affected by the devastating floods.

The THW, a federal voluntary emergency service in Germany, is well-equipped to provide specialist knowledge and diverse experiences in civil protection. The organisation is a sought-after supporter for fire services, police, aid organisations, and others.

The Bavarian transport team, consisting of 15 volunteer THW members from various regions, will be spearheading this relief effort. The loading of the relief supplies will commence today at 6:00 PM, with the team setting off overnight to the airport. Over the course of the journey, they will cover approximately 400 kilometers.

A portion of the relief supplies will be transported from Obernburg, Bavaria, to an airport by truck and trailer. The relief supply transport is coordinated via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

The Federal Foreign Office funds the relief supply transport, which is commissioned by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community. The first delivery of aid from the THW to the disaster area in Libya is scheduled for today.

The catastrophic floods in Libya have resulted in over 5,300 reported deaths and thousands of people still missing. Libya has declared affected regions as disaster areas and issued an international appeal for aid. The THW, with its over 80,000 volunteers nationwide, is deployed worldwide on behalf of the federal government to provide aid in such crisis situations.
