Aircraft from South Korea, chartered for the purpose, is set to travel to Atlanta in order to retrieve individuals from the U.S. workforce who have been detained.
A chartered plane from South Korea is set to fly from Incheon to Atlanta, carrying a team to address a recent immigration issue. The team is headed to Georgia, where a major immigration raid took place at a car battery plant.
The factory in question is a joint project by Hyundai Motor and LG Energy Solution, aimed at producing batteries for electric cars. The raid, the largest single-site enforcement operation in the history of the Department of Homeland Security's investigative operations, resulted in the arrest of 475 people, among whom were about 300 South Koreans.
The details on how these workers may have breached immigration rules have not been released by authorities or the companies. However, it is known that some of the workers may have overstepped the boundaries of a 90-day visa waiver program or a B-1 temporary business visa.
Hyundai Motor, one of the biggest foreign investors in the United States, and LG Energy Solution have declined to comment further on the situation. The South Korean government, on the other hand, has taken proactive steps to address the issue. Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol mentioned that some experts traveled from South Korea to help with a test run of the factory, which was due to begin production in October.
In response to the raid, the battery maker, LG Energy Solution, paused construction work on the factory. Production of electric vehicles at the factory, however, was not affected. Some staff at Hyundai Motor have been asked to suspend non-essential trips to the United States.
The meeting with the detained workers in custody was initiated by South Korean officials. South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun is traveling to Washington to negotiate on issues related to the detained Koreans. Cho called the detention of the South Koreans "a grave situation" and plans to work with Washington on measures to prevent similar incidents.
U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that many of the detained individuals would be deported. The immigration raid took place at a $4.3 billion project by Hyundai Motor and LG Energy Solution. Despite the challenges, Hyundai Motor has participated in a pledge of $150 billion in foreign direct investment in the U.S., in addition to a $350 billion fund separately pledged by the South Korean government.
As the situation unfolds, both countries are working towards resolving the issue and ensuring the safety and well-being of their citizens.
