Airport in Memmingen: Individual schedules self for double flight, fails to appear for either travel
In the small town of Memmingen, Bavaria, authorities are investigating a suspected case of human trafficking at the local airport. Over the past few weeks, border police have registered several attempts at deception, with a number of travelers found in possession of fake identity documents.
The latest incident involved a 27-year-old man who was stopped at Memmingen Airport with two booked flights to Skopje and Dublin. The police are investigating whether the man intended to relocate his centre of life to Ireland, using the fake IDs he carried. The flights to Skopje, it appears, were likely booked as an alibi.
The man was not the only one to be caught. Earlier this month, two Syrian sisters were stopped at the airport with manipulated Greek passports, and a 16-year-old Syrian was apprehended with a forged identity card. Travelers from Kuwait were also stopped with forged Greek passports in their luggage.
The police believe that a 43-year-old Swede may be behind the forged papers. An Albanian man was found to have fake identity cards in his wallet, and a 26-year-old man is suspected by the police at Memmingen Airport of operating a human trafficking ring. He was ordered to leave Germany immediately.
It's worth noting that Memmingen Airport, operated by Flughafen Memmingen GmbH, has one terminal and is located approximately four kilometers east of Memmingen city centre. Notable airlines operating at the airport include Ryanair, Wizz Air, Eurowings, Aegean Airlines, Freebird, Avanti Air, and GP Aviation.
This is not the first time Memmingen Airport authorities have discovered fake identity cards in the possession of a traveler. The airport police are urging vigilance and encouraging the public to report any suspicious activity. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to uncover the full extent of the alleged human trafficking ring.
