In the world of New Mexico high school football, the 2022 season has already seen its fair share of surprises and enduring streaks.

Firstly, the Alamogordo Tigers, currently 2-0 in Class 6A's regular season, have registered their best win in years. They defeated the reigning 5A state champion Roswell with a score of 27-13, marking a significant milestone for the team. Alamogordo's senior quarterback, Nathanael Best, has been one of 6A's most efficient dual-threat QBs, gaining nearly 1,150 rush yards as a junior.

Meanwhile, Bryce Parra, a senior for Class 5A's top-ranked Bulldogs, is off to a stellar start. With 320 rushing yards through just two games, he is on pace for a 1,600-yard season (not counting playoffs).

Elsewhere in Class 6A, Santa Fe, Albuquerque High, Piedra Vista, and Alamogordo are among the 2-0 teams. While these teams may not be ranked among New Mexico's strongest, their victories have been noteworthy. Piedra Vista's win over Bloomfield, which ended Bloomfield's 13-game streak in Class 4A, is one such example. This win is among the most surprising results from a 6A team so far this young season.

In Class 4A, three undefeated state champions from 2024 have seen their winning streaks end. Melrose, Bloomfield, and Texico, who had 18, 13, and 18-game unbeaten runs respectively, have all tasted defeat. Santa Rosa halted Texico's streak in 2A, adding another surprising result to the season.

In a different class, 6-Man champ Logan has won 14 games in a row, matching the number of consecutive wins by 6A's Cleveland. Interestingly, only Piedra Vista was ranked in the first top-10 coaches poll of the season.

St. Michael's, currently on a 22-game winning streak, holds the longest active streak in New Mexico. If they continue on this path, they could reach the top 5 on New Mexico's all-time list of longest winning streaks. Their last loss was on Oct. 1, 2023, against West Las Vegas.

Hershul Olloway Jr., St. Pius' fantastic running back, has been offered a scholarship by New Mexico State. In two games, Olloway has rushed for 278 yards, averaging over 10 yards a carry.

As for the Alamogordo Tigers, their coach, AJ Cisco, believes that if they play well, they will attract more attention. In preparation for their upcoming games against Albuquerque High and Piedra Vista, Andrea Cisco, the coach's wife, will scout Albuquerque High for the upcoming game.

Looking back, the 2022 season in New Mexico high school football has been filled with unexpected results and enduring streaks. As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see which teams continue their winning ways and which new contenders emerge.
