Allegations of physical harm against a former North Texas teaching assistant, as claimed by authorities, are leading to criminal charges. The accused is said to have mistreated a special needs child.

A former teacher's aide at Greenville Independent School District (ISD) has been arrested and charged with injuring a special needs child. Lakenya Dwynette Harris, who previously worked as a teaching assistant, was taken into custody by Greenville ISD police officers and booked into jail following an arrest warrant issued on Thursday, Sept. 4.

According to police records, Harris' bond has been set at $75,000. The details about the nature of the injuries or the specific incident have not been released due to federal and state privacy laws. However, the allegations against Harris were reported by a parent who expressed concerns about Harris physically hurting a special education student.

Harris has been charged with injury to a child/elderly/disabled with intent to cause bodily injury. It's unclear if Harris has obtained legal representation at this time. The district notified both Child Protective Services and the Greenville ISD Police Department about the incident.

The investigation is ongoing as of the time of the report. Greenville ISD Superintendent Dr. Joe Lopez initiated a formal internal investigation upon receiving the report. Dr. Lopez reiterated the district's commitment to providing a safe learning environment.

Meanwhile, the disciplinary process against Harris is currently under review by the Texas State Board for Educator Certification. It's unknown if any other individuals were involved in the alleged incident.

In a separate development, Briauna Brown, a digital content producer for the news outlet, is responsible for writing, editing, and producing social media content for all Texas digital platforms. The disciplinary process against Brown, a former Greenville ISD teaching assistant, is also under review by the Texas State Board for Educator Certification. No further information has been provided about the current status or future actions regarding Harris' employment with Greenville ISD or Brown's certification status.

As the investigation continues, the community and the school district await more details about the incident and the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings against Harris and Brown.
