Alleged Cryptocurrency Scam Uncovered

In recent weeks, two elderly residents of Gummersbach and Kaufering have fallen victim to investment scams, resulting in significant financial losses. These incidents serve as a reminder for the public to be vigilant and cautious when it comes to online investments.

Unusually high profits with little investment should always raise suspicion. The police have warned against transferring money to unknown individuals, especially when it comes to cryptocurrency investments. A 70-year-old man from Gummersbach lost a six-figure sum, and an 84-year-old woman in Kaufering was tricked into handing over 50,000 euros in cash to fraudsters posing as police officers.

The nature of the scam remains unspecified by the police, but they advise against using messaging services and email to invest in cryptocurrency. It is crucial to inform yourself about trading platforms before signing up or transferring money. Cybercriminals often exploit the lack of experience and put pressure on victims to transfer their money.

In both cases, the contact with the supposed crypto-broker was made through a messaging service and via email. The scammers then transferred the victims' money to their own accounts abroad. The police do not provide information on how to recover the lost funds, but they urge anyone who suspects an investment scam to contact local police.

For reporting suspected investment scams, contact local police. For questions or more information about this topic, contact the crime prevention department at Tel. 02261 8199-4711 or via email at [email protected]. The police remind the public that sensitive data, such as online banking login details, should never be given out. Do not let yourself be pressured into transferring money.

Many victims are inexperienced with online investments and are targeted by cybercriminals. It is essential to approach online investments with caution and diligence, and to always verify the legitimacy of any investment opportunity before committing funds. Stay safe and protect your hard-earned money.
