Allegedly, an unauthorized resident cast a ballot in the 2024 election of a crucial state, as claimed by authorities.
In a significant development, a 34-year-old immigrant from Jamaica, Naseef Bryan, is facing charges for allegedly voting illegally in several elections in New Hampshire, including the 2024 presidential primary and general elections.
Bryan, who holds a permanent U.S. resident status, is accused of knowingly casting ballots in the 2023 local Manchester election, the 2024 presidential primary, and the 2024 general election. If convicted, he is facing between three and a half and seven years in New Hampshire State Prison and a fine of up to $4,000.
Bryan's grievances against the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) are unclear due to the filings being "ambiguous and contain[ing] long stretches of writing about disparate topics." In one filing, he references maritime law and requests relief in the form of gold coins.
This incident comes at a time when concerns over noncitizens illegally voting are growing across the country. In Texas, state Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, is investigating more than 100 potential noncitizens who allegedly cast at least 200 ballots in the 2020 and 2022 election cycles. The majority of the suspected illegal ballots were in Harris County. Paxton's office is also investigating possible instances in Guadalupe, Cameron, and Eastland counties.
The discovery of potential illegal voting by noncitizens in Texas was made possible by an executive order signed by former President Donald Trump, directing the Department of Homeland Security to provide the USCIS's SAVE Database to the states.
In New Hampshire, the Republican-backed law requiring proof of U.S. citizenship for voting was signed into law in September 2024 but did not take effect until after the 2024 presidential election. Since 2021, Republicans have controlled the governor's office and both chambers of the state legislature in New Hampshire.
Meanwhile, Democratic Rep. Yvette Clarke of New York recently raised alarms when she suggested in a resurfaced video that she needed immigrants to bolster the numbers in her district for redistricting purposes.
It is important to note that no specific individual who is a non-U.S. citizen voting in the 2024 presidential elections in a state other than New Hampshire has been identified. Investigations in Texas and Michigan found very few potential cases of non-citizens voting amid millions of ballots, indicating such incidents are extremely rare and isolated.
Naseef Bryan's arraignment is scheduled for August at the Ninth Circuit Court, Manchester District Division. As the investigation continues, the issue of noncitizen voting remains a topic of national interest and debate.
