AMD's groundbreaking Ryzen AI Max processors outperform in gaming and video editing tasks
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 saw some exciting announcements in the tech world, and one of the standout stars was AMD's Ryzen AI Max series.
The Asus ROG Flow Z13, equipped with a Ryzen AI Max APU chipset, ran Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart smoothly without any frame drops or stuttering, showcasing the gaming prowess of this new series.
Meanwhile, the HP ZBook Ultra 14 G1a, integrated with AMD's Ryzen AI Max Pro, demonstrated its potential for video editing tasks. The mobile workstation, which weighs under 4 pounds, demonstrated fast transcription capabilities using Black Magic's DaVinci Resolve.
HP won Best Laptop at CES 2025 for the ZBook Ultra 14 G1a, while AMD's Ryzen AI Max, codenamed "Strix Halo," took home the Best-in-Show award.
The Ryzen AI Max series offers incredible performance not only in gaming and content creation but also in AI. The chipset boasts up to 16 cores and 32 threads, with a boost clock ranging from 4.9GHz to 5.1GHz.
In terms of memory, the Ryzen AI Max series offers up to 128GB of unified memory, of which up to 96GB can be dedicated to the GPU. This is a significant advantage over Intel's Lunar Lake chips, which also feature unified memory, but only up to 64GB.
AMD's Joe Macri credited Apple for proving that people will buy powerful computers without discrete graphics, comparing the Ryzen AI Max chip's performance to Apple's M4 Pro silicon. AMD is aiming at M-series performance with the Ryzen AI Max chip.
Elsewhere at CES 2025, Qualcomm made a play for MacBook users with its new suite of creative applications. Meanwhile, the reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 and expectations for Intel's new processors in 2025 were other hot topics discussed at the event.
The Asus ROG Flow Z13 can be connected to the XG Mobile eGPU with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 or RTX 5090 for even more powerful gaming capabilities.
The Ryzen AI Max series is set to make waves in the tech industry, offering a compelling alternative for those seeking high-performance computing without the need for a desktop workstation.
