Ancient Find in Saxony: 3000-year-old treasure unearthed!

In August 2023, a significant archaeological discovery was made at the western edge of the defined investigation area in Klein Neundorf, Germany. A team of volunteers and experts, under the guidance of Dr. Jasper von Richthofen, the director of the Görlitz Collections, uncovered a 3,000-year-old Bronze Age treasure.

The treasure, consisting of over 310 objects and weighing over 16 kg, is the largest bronze hoard from the Upper Lusatian region and the second-largest in the entire Free State. The objects, which include jewelry, weapons, tools, and a rare fibula of the Spindlersfeld type, were carefully deposited in a small pit, suspected to be a ritual deposit rather than a simple hiding.

The discovery was initially made in 1900 by children while harvesting potatoes. However, the search for the treasure was not reinitiated until 2023, when Dr. von Richthofen rediscovered the relevant entry and launched the search. Among the discovered objects, a sword that possibly originates from South Germany was also found, along with a bronze-age battle axe and three ancient daggers.

After restoration, the hoard will be exhibited in Goerlitz, where the initial discovery occurred. The restoration and evaluation process will take several months to complete, ensuring that each artifact is handled with the utmost care and respect.

In a recent presentation in Dresden, archaeologists showcased a selection of the discovered objects, offering a glimpse into this remarkable find. The treasure's discovery not only provides valuable insights into the Bronze Age culture of the region but also serves as a testament to the dedication and hard work of the team involved in its discovery and preservation.

Once the restoration and evaluation process is complete, the public will have the opportunity to marvel at this ancient treasure in its hometown of Goerlitz. The discovery of the Klein Neundorf Bronze Age treasure is a significant addition to Germany's archaeological heritage and is sure to captivate visitors for years to come.
