New Cabinet Lineup in Taiwan: Emphasis on Fiscal and Economic Policy
A significant reshuffle in Taiwan's Cabinet is expected to take place following today's second recall vote. According to sources, the new lineup will place greater emphasis on fiscal and economic policy.
Premier Cho Jung-tai and Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun are set to remain in their positions. Kung Ming-hsin, a financial expert and former head of the National Development Council, will return as Minister of Economic Affairs. He will replace J.W. Kuo, who has tendered his resignation due to health reasons.
In a surprising turn of events, Kung faced calls to resign from both the Democratic Progressive Party and the Chinese Nationalist Party. However, he is expected to take on an additional role as Secretary-General of the Executive Yuan, replacing Presidential Office Deputy Secretary-General Xavier Chang.
Alexander Yui, the current Representative to the US, is not expected to be reassigned, according to a source. However, there were reports that Yui was to be replaced by National Security Council Deputy Secretary-General Hsu Szu-chien. These reports have been denied, and Hsu is not expected to become Representative to the US, according to people familiar with the matter.
The successor of Alexander Yui as the representative of Taiwan in the USA is Kelly Hsieh. The reports of Yui being appointed representative to Spain have caused inconvenience to Taiwan's representative office in the US. However, Lii Wen, Presidential Office spokesperson, is not expected to become Representative to Spain, according to the denial of rumors.
Huang Yen-nun, Minister of Digital Affairs, will return to Academia Sinica when his secondment expires on Aug. 31. No personnel moves regarding Taiwan's diplomatic corps have been confirmed.
