The German Ministry of Defense announced a new benefit for conscripts on Wednesday in Berlin: free train rides. This small addition to the overall budget is intended for professional soldiers, according to Müller from the Ministry of Defense (BMVg), who made the comments in response to a query from the dts news agency.

The new benefit is a response to the upcoming new military service, which is expected to cost the German government a significant amount. However, the costs are not expected to significantly affect the overall budget, as they will be taken into account and reflected in the budget beyond 2026.

The Ministry of Defense expects an increase in the number of soldiers using trains as a natural consequence of the new benefit. This increase, however, is not mentioned as a direct cause of the rise in train usage by soldiers.

The new military service, set to start next year, is already reflected in the draft budget for 2026. The German Armed Forces, with a total strength of 180,000 soldiers, are expected to grow by up to 30,000 volunteers in the coming years.

The spokesperson for the ministry stated that the new benefit should not significantly affect the "Train Travel in Uniforms" budget. Furthermore, the Ministry of Defense does not anticipate significant financial impacts from the new benefit, as it is a small increase compared to the overall budget.

The new military service costs are not expected to cause significant financial changes beyond the costs of the new benefit. Müller emphasised that the new benefit should not be seen as a major financial burden but as a small gesture of appreciation for the service of professional soldiers.

This new benefit comes at a time when the German Armed Forces are preparing for significant expansion. The military service is expected to provide a boost to the country's defence capabilities, ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
