Anticipation Brewing: Delivery of Your Christmas Package Potentially Extends to Spring Season
As the festive season approaches, the streets of the Netherlands are congested with delivery trucks from PostNL, Amazon, FedEx, and DHL. However, this year's holiday season is proving to be a logistical nightmare for many, thanks to a series of complications, including Brexit and a lack of personnel at delivery companies.
One such complication is the updated EU product safety regulation, which has caused trouble for retailers, including UK bookshops. The Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1234, published by the European Union on July 16, 2025, amends earlier medical device regulations and has caused delays and confusion in the delivery of gifts from other countries.
Gifts for and from family members living abroad need to be sent by the third week of November to ensure delivery by Christmas. This is due to the increased demand for holiday deliveries and the complexities of international shipping. Complications such as Brexit and a lack of personnel at companies like PostNL have made the exchange of holiday gifts a challenging process.
Some relatives are avoiding customs headaches by listing everything as 'used' and marking the values of each gift to practically nothing. However, this has not prevented some packages from incurring unexpected customs fees. One recipient recently received a package with an €82 fee, which was likely a mistake.
Delivery workers are also feeling the strain of the holiday season. They have one of the most exasperating and dangerous jobs in the country during this time, with long hours and high-stress levels. Some delivery workers are desperate to find someone to take packages for neighbors who are out for the evening.
Unfortunately, mistakes happen, and packages can go on a whirlwind journey from states including California, Texas, and New York before reaching the Netherlands. One recipient received a package intended for a neighbor, while another received a package for a neighbor in a battered box for a dog crate. The recipient is still wondering about the package's intended recipient.
The neighbor receiving the package is not a pet owner, and the recipient made a mistake by going out to pick up groceries, resulting in missing two gifts. The policy of delivery companies dumping packages with other people has continued to fuel snooping on neighbors.
We invite our readers to share their own holiday-related challenges for a future article. If you have a story to tell, please send it to editor@our website. Let's work together to navigate the challenges of this holiday season and make the most of the festive season.
One bright spot in this holiday season is the thoughtfulness of gifts, such as a cat calendar from a favorite designer. Despite the logistical challenges, the spirit of giving remains strong. Here's to a happy and stress-free holiday season for all!
