"António Mota's literary work, titled Pedro Alecrim, has been translated into the Mirandese language"
In a significant milestone, the Mirandese language version of the beloved book 'Bai Pedro Bai' has been translated and is set to be presented on September 17, the Day of the Mother Tongue. This timely release not only preserves the sensitivity and humour of the original text but also values and celebrates Portugal's linguistic and cultural heritage.
First published in 1988 by António Mota, 'Bai Pedro Bai' has already garnered over 40 editions and has captured the hearts of readers worldwide. The story revolves around Pedro Alecrim, a curious and simple-hearted boy living in a rural village. Pedro's days are spent between school, playing with friends, and working in the fields to assist his family.
The Mirandese version of the book has caught the attention of translators after a presentation in Miranda do Douro in 2023. It is worth noting that Mirandese became Portugal's second official language 27 years ago, following the approval of the law recognizing this status in the Assembly of the Republic on September 17, 1998.
One of the translators, Carlos Ferreira, emphasized the book's importance for the teaching of Mirandese in schools due to the lack of literary works for the infant and youth age group in the Mirandese language. He also stated that the book is almost biographical for him as he had a similar path.
The book's plot takes an emotional turn when Pedro's father passes away, changing everything for the young protagonist. This moving narrative is expected to resonate with the approximately 3,000 Mirandese speakers in the land of Miranda, according to the most recent study by the University of Vigo.
'Bai Pedro Bai' has already won the Gulbenkian Prize for Children's and Young Adult Literature, and its Mirandese version is poised to continue the book's legacy of promoting cultural diversity and preserving linguistic heritage.
In the schools of Miranda do Douro, Mirandese is taught as an optional subject, providing an opportunity for the younger generation to learn and appreciate their native language. However, a recent study concluded that if no action is taken, the Mirandese language may decline. The release of the Mirandese version of 'Bai Pedro Bai' is a step towards preserving this precious language and culture for future generations.
