Le Corbusier's Cité Radieuse Apartment Up for Sale

A unique opportunity for design enthusiasts has arisen with the listing of a duplex apartment within Le Corbusier's iconic Cité Radieuse in Marseille, France. The two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit, spanning 100 square metres, is currently available for €495,000.

Built between 1947 and 1952, the Cité Radieuse is a cornerstone of mid-20th-century architecture and a seminal work of brutalism. It was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2016, making it a significant piece of living history.

The main floor of the apartment features an open-plan living and dining area, fronted by a glazed facade, providing ample natural light. The compact kitchen, originally designed by Charlotte Perriand, was inspired by Margaret Schütte-Lihotzky's 1928 Frankfurter Küche.

Le Corbusier's vision for Cité Radieuse included interconnected apartments serving as 'interior streets', allowing residents to live, work, and socialize without leaving the complex. This duplex apartment embodies this philosophy, with its elegant, lightweight metal staircase with solid oak treads, designed by Jean Prouvé, connecting the two floors.

One of the most important collaborators of Le Corbusier in the interior design of the Cité Radieuse was Charlotte Perriand. The current owners of the apartment have embraced Le Corbusier's aesthetic, using primary-coloured panels on interior and exterior walls and doors.

In addition to apartments, the Cité Radieuse complex includes shops, a café, a hotel, a nursery, a gallery, and an open-air theatre. Residents also have access to a rooftop swimming pool and solarium.

Le Corbusier once stated that "a house is a machine for living in". This apartment, with its functional design and connection to the larger community, truly embodies that philosophy. For those who appreciate modernist architecture and the work of Le Corbusier, this is a chance to inhabit a piece of living history.
