Elderly Woman Arrested for Residential Burglaries in Malaga and Mijas

An 81-year-old woman has been arrested in Malaga city for a series of residential burglaries, marking a significant development in the ongoing efforts to combat property crimes. The National Police made the arrest, rather than the Guardia Civil, and the suspect is believed to be responsible for five robberies in tourist and holiday complexes in Mijas.

The suspect, who allegedly used her "frail granny" appearance to avoid suspicion, was caught in the act during her latest attempt. She reportedly exploited open windows or doors left ajar at night to gain access to properties and scaled buildings to reach them. Once inside, she stole jewellery and cash while the unaware occupants slept.

The woman allegedly used plastic strips to pry open spring-loaded latch bolts rather than locking doors with keys. This method allowed her to enter properties stealthily, often going unnoticed by residents. However, her actions were not enough to deter the vigilant locals, who are well aware of the situation and are more accustomed to locking their doors and windows at night.

Despite attempting a "poor confused old lady" act, the suspect was placed under provisional custody after judicial proceedings. It is worth noting that this arrest is a separate case from the Guardia Civil's Operation "Escoba," which was conducted in Mijas, Spain, targeting burglaries in tourist and holiday rental properties where thefts occurred while occupants were asleep.

Operation "Escoba," led by the Guardia Civil, was initiated by the Guardia Civil in May following a complaint from a holidaymaker in Mijas. The investigation uncovered the suspect's identity and modus operandi, leading to the woman's arrest in mid-July. The arrest was made in Fuengirola, and the suspect was presented before the court there.

Most crimes in Spain are non-violent and involve low-scale theft, such as pickpocketing, shoplifting, or burglary. This case serves as a reminder to travellers and residents alike to remain vigilant and secure their properties, especially in tourist areas. The woman is considered a seasoned offender with a long history of residential robberies, indicating the importance of continued efforts to combat property crimes in Spain.
