In a significant turn of events, a Dhaka court has ordered the jailing of Saddam Hossain Pavel, a former Awami League lawmaker from Nilphamari-3 constituency, in a case filed at New Market Police Station over an attempted murder during the 2021 July Uprising.

The incident took place in front of New Market Gate No-2 in the capital on 2 August last year, where the accused opened fire on a procession of students and the public. As a result, several students, including plaintiff Habibur Rahman, were injured.

Eight individuals, including Pavel, were arrested by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police over allegations of planning and financing subversive activities. Alongside Pavel, Kaykobad Osmani, central executive member of Jubo League, and Delwar Hossain Bablu, an Awami League leader from Ward-32 in Dhaka, were among the arrestees.

Tanzil Hossain Ovi, organising secretary of the Bauphal upazila unit of the banned Chhatra League in Patuakhali, was also among those arrested. Al Mamun Bhuiyan, organising secretary of Jubo League's Uttara East Ward-1 unit, and Anisur Rahman Hawlader, a union-level Jubo League leader, were arrested during the raids. Md Anwar Hossain, former president of Khitirpata union AL and ex-UP chairman in Louhajang, Munshiganj, was arrested as part of the operation.

Pavel was produced at court today (5 September) by the police, and Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhadra passed the order for his jailing. The court order was based on the case documents and the testimony presented by the police.

It is important to note that the jailing of Pavel does not affect his status as a former Awami League lawmaker. However, it does not absolve him from the charges of planning and financing subversive activities, as stated in the case documents.

The jailing of Pavel is separate from the arrest over allegations of planning and financing subversive activities. Court sources confirmed the jailing of Pavel, but there is no information available in the provided search results about the name of the court where Saddam Hossain Pavel was charged before September 5, 2023.

The arrests and subsequent jailing of these individuals underscore the ongoing efforts to maintain law and order in Bangladesh and bring those responsible for violent incidents to justice. The case is a reminder of the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety of citizens, especially during times of political unrest.
