The world of smart TVs is set to undergo a significant transformation with the integration of Microsoft's AI assistant, Copilot, into Samsung's 2025 lineup of TVs and smart monitors.

According to market reports, the smart TV market has demonstrated immense potential, with the global market valued at around $226 billion in 2024 and projected to grow significantly, reaching as high as $745.5 billion by 2034. With a smart TV penetration surpassing 54% of households and some reports projecting this to exceed 1.1 billion households by 2026, the stage is set for a truly intelligent TV experience.

Samsung TVs will be the first to roll out Copilot, but Microsoft has also announced that LG TVs will also get Copilot. This integration marks a shift from the traditional AI use in TVs, which has primarily been in the background powering features like AI upscaling, sound optimization, and recommendation engines.

Copilot is not just another voice command feature; it's a leap forward in what a "smart TV" can actually do. With Copilot, users can ask for movie suggestions, spoiler-free recaps of their favorite shows, or answers to general questions while watching TV. It can remember past conversations and adjust recommendations over time if users sign in with their accounts.

The unique interface of Copilot features a bouncing beige blob that serves as an animated presence on the screen. Copilot runs on large language models developed by OpenAI, allowing it to generate text, summarize content, and answer questions in a conversational way. This means users can ask complex questions and get meaningful answers, such as "Remind me what happened in the second Matrix movie without spoiling the third one."

The use of conversational AI in TVs has the potential to turn TV interaction into something more, making it feel more intuitive and less frustrating compared to traditional voice commands. As a result, today's "smart TVs" could be seen as less intelligent compared to what's coming in the future.

It's likely that other TV manufacturers will adopt conversational AI in the future, following the trend set by Samsung and LG. The rollout of Copilot in TVs could lead to a new era of smart TVs, where the gap between the large number of people who own a smart TV and the small fraction that actually use its most advanced features could be significantly reduced.

The 2025 lineup includes Neo QLEDs, OLEDs, Micro RGB, and the art-friendly Frame models, as well as the M7, M8, and M9 smart monitors. With Copilot, users can look forward to a smarter, more interactive, and more enjoyable TV and monitor experience starting in 2025.
