In the ever-evolving world of technology, AI-capable PCs are making a significant mark. These devices, offering individualized configurations, allow users to choose the desired apps and functions, creating a tailor-made experience.

However, the growth of AI PCs is not without its challenges. Market uncertainty and tariffs have led to a slowdown in their introduction in 2025. Despite this, market research firms predict that AI PCs will become the norm in device manufacturers' portfolios within four years.

The more users interact with an AI PC provider, the better the provider understands them, according to market research. This understanding is expected to lead to a better understanding of users by the providers, enhancing the user experience.

The individualization of AI PCs is also expected to lead to more local AI applications. This increased prevalence of AI PCs could result in continuous improvements and stronger brand loyalty, as providers focus on user interactions to make continuous improvements.

The use of smaller language models (SLMs) in AI PCs promises lower energy consumption and less dependence on cloud services. These SLMs, which can be executed locally on PCs, enable "intelligence" tailored to specific tasks and faster response times.

Major software providers like SAP are heavily investing in AI functionalities, planning to expand AI-supported use cases significantly by the end of 2025. Companies such as IBM and Dataiku are noted for AI governance tools development, while Microsoft is advancing integrated AI functionalities for Microsoft 365 to run directly on PCs.

For growth in the AI PC market, PC manufacturers must focus on the software-defined, user-oriented fit of their offerings for specific use cases. By the end of 2026, around 40 percent of software providers are predicted to invest in AI functions that run directly on PCs.

Gartner analyst Ranjit Atwal expects a more moderate growth rate for AI PCs. Nevertheless, by the end of 2026, around 77.8 million AI-capable desktop PCs and notebooks are expected to be sold, accounting for a market share of 31 percent of global shipments. By the same year, sales of AI-capable PCs are projected to reach approximately 143 million units, with a market share of nearly 55 percent.

The future of AI PCs lies in individualization, allowing users to configure their devices with the desired apps and functions. The use of SLMs provides better protection of one's own data compared to larger models. With these advancements, AI PCs are poised to revolutionize the way we interact with technology.
