In the world of art, two distinct figures stand out - Pierre-Jacques Volaire and Rob Houchen.

Born into a family of painters in Toulon, southern France, Pierre-Jacques Volaire moved to Naples in 1769, where he would create one of his most famous works, "An Eruption of Vesuvius by Moonlight," in 1771. This painting, more than 8ft wide, depicts a fiery fissure in the side of the volcano, contrasting the cool tones of the moonlit sky and sea with the hot gas emitted from the volcano. The Bay of Naples in the painting is still and calm, while the lava sea below is in motion, creating a cinematic scale that captivates viewers to this day. Volaire had 30 different paintings of Vesuvius, including "An Eruption of Vesuvius by Moonlight," which he sold to aristocrats on the Grand Tour.

Fast forward to the present, and another artist, Rob Houchen, has chosen a painting by Egon Schiele as his favourite. The specific piece, yet to be disclosed, is considered bold and challenging, much like Schiele's other works.

Meanwhile, art critic, writer, and broadcaster Charlotte Mullins has a new book titled The Art Isles to be published by Yale University Press in October 2025. This book will cover a 15,000-year story of art in the British Isles, a testament to Mullins' deep interest and knowledge in the field. Mullins has previously edited Art Review and The V&A Magazine, making her a respected voice in the art world.

As we delve into the world of art, we are reminded of the beauty and power that these creations hold, transporting us to different times and places, and evoking a myriad of emotions. Whether it's the fiery depiction of Vesuvius by moonlight or the bold and challenging choices of contemporary artists like Rob Houchen, art continues to inspire and captivate us.
