On a sombre note, Ukraine is grappling with the investigation into the death of former parliamentary speaker, Andriy Parubiy. The prominent right-wing nationalist, who served as parliamentary deputy of the Svoboda party, died in a hospital after sustaining multiple gunshots. The circumstances surrounding his death are yet to be officially confirmed, but media reports suggest a courier of a delivery service on a bicycle may have been the perpetrator.

Parubiy's political career was marked by significant roles. He served as secretary of the national security and defense council of Ukraine in 2014, and later as parliamentary speaker from 2016 to 2019. During the pro-Western revolution on Independence Square in Kyiv, he led the "Self-Defense Maidan" organization and commanded a tent camp.

The tragic events of 2014 in Odessa are still fresh in the minds of many Ukrainians. Independence Day this year is being celebrated with a mix of joy and solemnity, as the city was the site of a series of street battles between Ukrainian nationalists and pro-Moscow protesters around the trade union building. Dozens of people, mainly government opponents, lost their lives in these clashes, and several pro-Russian activists died in a fire at the trade union building. The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has condemned the Ukrainian authorities for the bloody clashes and fire disaster.

The Kremlin-linked Russian political scientist, Sergei Markov, has accused Parubiy of organizing the "massacre" in Odessa on May 2, 2014. However, no direct attribution or accusation by Markov regarding Parubiy's murder appears in the cited sources. It's important to note that the Kremlin-linked expert's accusations against Parubiy have not been verified or confirmed.

In a separate news story, the city of Odessa is currently being celebrated in blue-yellow, the national colours of Ukraine, as its citizens rejoice in their Independence Day. Meanwhile, the investigations into Parubiy's murder and the search for the perpetrator are ongoing.

As the nation mourns the loss of a prominent figure and reflects on the dark events of the past, the people of Ukraine continue to strive for peace and unity in their journey towards independence.
