Assessment of Nadine Dorries' departure from the Conservative Party: Why few in the party will mourn her exit

In a surprising turn of events, former Conservative Party member Nadine Dorries has joined Nigel Farage's Reform Party. This move marks a significant shift for Dorries, who was once a Cabinet Minister and a loyalist to Boris Johnson.

Dorries, who was known for her involvement in the culture wars, found herself suspended from the Conservative Party in 2020 due to her appearance on the reality TV show "I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here." The suspension was initiated by then-Prime Minister David Cameron.

Prior to her suspension, Dorries represented the constituency of Mid-Bedfordshire. However, her tenure was not met with much success, with most constituents believing she achieved little locally. Consequently, she chose to quit her seat a year early.

Despite her political career, Dorries has been increasingly seen as a liability within the Conservative Party and is often used as a punchline. Her move to the Reform Party, which offers a second act and a platform for fading political figures to express their grievances, could be seen as an attempt to rewrite her legacy.

Nigel Farage, the leader of the Reform Party, introduced Dorries to the party. Other notable members include Harry Todd, a former Conservative Party agent who has served as a councillor and was on the approved Conservative Parliamentary Candidates list.

Interestingly, Todd has also chosen to remain in the Conservative Party, suggesting a potential divide within the party's ranks. Dorries, on the other hand, did not contest the 2024 General Election, signifying her full commitment to the Reform Party.
