Assessment: Potentially Groundbreaking G-SHOCK GW5000U Model Could Eclipse Previous G-SHOCK Standards

The story of the G-SHOCK, a symbol of durability and innovation in the world of horology, began in 1982. Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe, inspired by a bouncing rubber ball at a local playground in Japan, set out to create a virtually unbreakable watch. This quest led to the development of over 200 prototypes, alongside "Team Tough," resulting in the first G-SHOCK, the DW-5000C, which was released in 1983.

Fast forward to 2021, the iconic DW-5000 was reintroduced as the Casio G-Shock GW-5000U, a Japan-exclusive tribute watch with modern technology. One of the most coveted models in the brand's lineup, the GW-5000U-1, continues to uphold the legacy of toughness and reliability.

The GW-5000U-1 boasts a sleek design, with a rectangular-shaped LCD display hidden beneath a mineral crystal dial. The case is wrapped in matte-black resin with a DLC-treated steel screw-down caseback, giving it a sophisticated yet rugged appearance. The watch's case size measures 42.8mm, with a lug-to-lug of 48.9mm and a case thickness of 13.5mm, making it a comfortable fit for most wrists. The all-black resin strap is more comfortable and molds better to the contours of the wrist compared to entry-level G-SHOCK straps.

The GW-5000U-1's digital display features "phantom digits" that become distorted at certain viewing angles, adding a unique touch to its design. This watch also offers dual-screen functionality, allowing operation of the Stop Watch and Countdown Timer while viewing the local time. The main screen displays the local time, day, and date.

Powered by a solar-powered quartz movement called "Tough Solar," the GW-5000U ensures self-sustaining operation. The light button triggers an LED backlight that can be toggled between 1.5 seconds and 3 seconds, providing excellent visibility in low light conditions.

The World Time feature on the GW-5000U allows tracking of 5 different time zones simultaneously, spanning 48 cities across 31 time zones. The watch uses Multi-Band 6 automatic radio time adjustment for accuracy, ensuring that it remains on time no matter where your adventures take you.

The GW-5000U is a contender for the ultimate one-and-done G-SHOCK, offering reliability, understated design, and self-sustaining features. After 40-plus years, over 100 million G-SHOCKs have been sold, cementing the Casio sub-brand in the horology lexicon. The GW-5000U-1, a testament to Casio's commitment to innovation and durability, continues to carry the torch of the G-SHOCK legacy.
