In the skies of Primorye, Russia, an exciting astronomical discovery was made by local amateur astronomer, Philipp Romanov. On September 10, 2025, Romanov, using a telescope, spotted a supernova star, SN 2025umq, during his observations.

The discovery of SN 2025umq was reported by PrimaMedia, who shared the news via their Telegram channel and Vkontakte page. The supernova star, located over 2 billion light-years away from Earth, is classified despite its distance and faintness, making it a remarkable find.

Interestingly, SN 2025umq is not situated near the centre of its parent galaxy, adding to the intrigue of this celestial event. Romanov, in an interview, expressed his luck and excitement at having spotted the supernova star.

The same evening, Romanov also captured a total lunar eclipse, a rare astronomical event known as the "bloody moon." Due to the weather conditions, he had to take the first few photos of the eclipse through gaps in the clouds. Despite the challenging circumstances, he managed to create an impressive collage of 12 photos documenting all phases of the "blood moon."

Unfortunately, the weather took a turn for the worse during the lunar eclipse, with clouds rolling in, obstructing the view. However, the weather had been clear at the start of the event, allowing Romanov to capture the initial stages of the eclipse.

The Liverpool Telescope was also used to spot SN 2025umq, although no prior context was provided regarding this. PrimaMedia reported the information, further highlighting the significance of Romanov's discovery.

Romanov's captures of both the supernova star and the total lunar eclipse serve as a testament to his dedication and passion for astronomy, providing the world with stunning images of these rare celestial events.
