Athletes engage in the contemporary "Battle of the Sexes" in the realm of tennis
In the world of tennis, a new "Battle of the Sexes" is on the horizon. Nick Kyrgios, a former top player, and current world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka are set to square off in an exhibition match in January 2026 in Hong Kong.
This exhibition will feature modified rules, aiming to attract a large audience. Similar to the historic "Battle of Champions" in 1992, where Martina Navratilova faced off against Jimmy Connors under hybrid rules, Kyrgios will have only one serve per point, while Sabalenka will play under standard rules.
Kyrgios, known more for his unconventional serve than major sporting achievements, is confident of victory. Despite the rules favouring Sabalenka, he plans to win 6-2 in the exhibition match.
Sabalenka, who has reached the semifinals of the current US Open, has been in fine form. Last year at the US Open, she had average serves of 129 km/h, outpacing menβs top stars like Jannik Sinner (126 km/h) and Carlos Alcaraz (127 km/h).
Meanwhile, Kyrgios's opponent, Sabalenka, has previously declared that she could beat men outside the top 200. This assertion echoes the sentiments of Billie Jean King, who famously defeated Bobby Riggs in the most impressive "Battle of the Sexes" match in 1973.
The first "Battle of the Sexes" match, known as the "Mother's Day Massacre," was won by Riggs 6-2, 6-1. However, King later avenged her defeat by winning three official matches under the "Battle of the Sexes" banner, including the most memorable one in September 1973, where she defeated Riggs 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 at the Astrodome in Houston.
Exhibition matches pitting men and women in sports are rare, with the latest installment seemingly on the horizon. In 1998, Karsten Braasch, a German professional tennis player ranked 203, played a set against both Serena Williams (16) and Venus Williams (18) in Melbourne. Braasch won both sets, 6:1, 6:2.
As for preparation, Braasch once famously played a leisurely round of golf in the morning and had a few beers before taking to the court. He later declared that preparation is important for such a game, but taking it too seriously would be a mistake. He arrived on the court appropriately relaxed.
With the new "Battle of the Sexes" match approaching, tennis fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting this exciting clash between Kyrgios and Sabalenka. The modified rules and the rare opportunity to witness such a match promise to make this exhibition a spectacle not to be missed.
