Australian Stock Market Experiences Slight Decline
Market Round-up: 26th October
In the Australian market, choppy trading on Thursday saw the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 losing 11.50 points or 0.13 percent, trading at 8,949.00. The broader All Ordinaries Index followed suit, down 18.60 points or 0.20 percent to 9,212.50.
Among the big four banks, Commonwealth Bank was the only gainer, rising more than 1 percent. However, major miners Rio Tinto and BHP Group saw a decline of almost 1 percent each.
Shares in Qantas surged almost 12 percent after reporting a $2.39 billion record profit. In contrast, shares in Telix Pharmaceuticals tumbled more than 16 percent due to identified deficiencies in the Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (CMC) package for its Zircaix product undergoing testing.
Afterpay owner Block edged down 0.1 percent, while WiseTech Global and Appen saw declines of almost 6 percent and 1 percent respectively. Oil stocks Beach energy and Woodside Energy also experienced losses, with Beach energy declining more than 4 percent and Woodside Energy losing 3.5 percent.
Shares in IDP Education soared more than 32 percent due to better-than-expected full-year results. The Aussie dollar is trading at $0.651 on Thursday.
Across the globe, the French CAC 40 Index climbed by 0.4 percent, while the U.K.'s FTSE 100 Index edged down by 0.1 percent and the German DAX Index fell by 0.4 percent.
In the US, stocks on Wall Street saw some further upside during trading on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 reaching a new record closing high. The Dow rose 147.16 points or 0.3 percent, the Nasdaq edged up 45.87 points or 0.2 percent, and the S&P 500 crept up 15.46 points or 0.2 percent.
Notable mentions include the president (Managing Director and Group CEO) of Ramsay Health Care, Natalie Davis. Crude oil prices surged on Wednesday, with West Texas Intermediate crude for October delivery up $0.83 or 1.33 percent at $64.08 per barrel.
