Austria Chooses Bernhard Wenger's Film 'Peacock' for Consideration in the Best International Feature Film Category at the Oscars
In the world of cinema, Austria's submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Oscars, "Peacock" (Pfau), stands out as a thought-provoking satire. Directed by Bernhard Wenger, this Austrian-German co-production premiered at the Venice Critics' Week last year and made its U.K. debut at the Glasgow Film Festival this year.
At the helm of this intriguing film is Matthias, a character played by German actor Albrecht Schuch. Matthias works for a rent-a-companion company, slipping seamlessly into various roles demanded by clients. However, his people-pleasing attitude has become so extreme that his girlfriend Sophia (Julia Franz Richter) begins to wonder if there's any of the 'real' him left.
Bernhard Wenger, known for short films like "Excuse Me, I'm Looking for the Ping-Pong Room and My Girlfriend," brings his unique perspective to "Peacock." The inspiration for the film comes from rent-a-friend agencies in Japan, a concept that Wenger found intriguing over 10 years ago.
"Peacock" is a satire that explores themes of identity and self-presentation in the social media age, without directly showing social media. Wenger sees self-presentation as a significant topic in society and wanted to discuss it in "Peacock."
Austria has a rich history at the Oscars, having won two international feature film awards: for Stefan Ruzowitzky's "The Counterfeiters" and Michael Haneke's "Amour." With "Peacock," Austria aims to add another accolade to its collection. The 98th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 15.
As the film unfolds, Matthias experiences an existential crisis, questioning his role and identity. "Peacock" is a compelling exploration of the lengths people will go to fit in and the cost of maintaining a perfect facade. It's a film that will leave audiences pondering long after the credits roll.
