Austria prolonged the third stringent lockdown period

In a press conference, Sebastian Kurz, the Chancellor of Austria, announced the extension of the third national lockdown due to the coronavirus until February 7. The lockdown, which began on December 26, was originally scheduled to end on January 24.

Kurz stated that the extension includes restrictions on leaving home, with the exception of a valid reason such as a walk. Retail, services, and museums are planned to reopen on February 8, if the target of approximately 700 new infections per day is met.

However, there is no certainty that the target can be achieved by the set deadline. The Chancellor also warned that the country still has two to three tough months ahead. He did not specify a new end date for the lockdown in his statement.

The Chancellor expressed optimism that once people over 65 are vaccinated, the situation in hospitals will improve. He also mentioned that theaters, cinemas, cafes and restaurants, shops, fitness centers, dance and sports sections will remain closed during the lockdown.

Almost nothing is open except supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, and services that do not involve close client contact. The 7-day incidence should be reduced to 50, and ideally to 25, before Austria can reopen.

The news was reported by Almaty.tv with reference to RIA Novosti. It was also revealed that hairdressers and beauty salons are included in the planned reopening.

The extension of the lockdown comes as Austria struggles to contain the spread of the virus. The country is currently battling a surge in cases and hospitalisations. The Chancellor aims to bring the 7-day incidence down to 50 by February 8.

The identity of the Prime Minister who announced the extension of the third lockdown area in Austria until February 7 was not found in the provided search results.
